Scary Thoughts
Tuesday, May 27, 2008
Happiness is a friendly gesture.

I thought I'd share this seeing as because of my work schedule,I won't be able to post this week. Next week, a plethora of panels.
About fifteen years ago I had the honor of meetiing "Sparky" Schulz, though I always referrred to him as Mr. Schulz. In San Francisco we shared a bus to our hotel from a cartooning function. We discussed cartooning and gag writing and tools of the trade.
As the ride was ending I mentioned to him I just "happened" to have on me, one of his little hardcover books; "I Need All the Friends I Can Get.". I had this since I was five. I learned to read before first grade because of these books. He said he'd be glad to sign it. Believe it or not, neither one of us had a pen. So I borrowed a brush pen from another artist and Mr. Schulz kindly signed my book. It reads "To Bill with friendship-Charles Schulz"
I had met my idol and for about an hour or so we were friends. Sigh.

Sunday Page--Roughing It....

I probably won't be posting this weekend so I scanned in one of my pencil roughs and marked in red the areas I would be fixing in cleanup. The original was only 3" x 7" and darkened in photoshop so the pencil lines would read. This is pretty close to how I work it out; A rough thumbnail (not quite as finished) look for places to fix and go to cleanup. Now with photoshop I can use this as a guide. I prefer redrawing it to get it right because it stiffens when I trace back in Photoshop, but I lose the spontaneity of drawing rough. Six of one...This is in reply to an email on how I work on the strip. New strips Monday...

A Note of Encouragement from a Cartoonist

When I first started working on my strip I sought advice from the very best and was lucky enough to receive a reply from the great, albeit reclusive, Bill Watterson. His advice was simple and to the point and appropo to any aspiring cartoonist. So I thought I'd share it.
Still, he never mentioned the fact that cream can curdle or turn sour.

Daily Comic Strip--Ritual Killing

I posted this Pencil rough several weeks ago. Here is the finish. I inked the final with a Copic SM brush. Scanned the image to photoshop, adjusted and colored the elements in photoshop. The scans are not holding up very well so I also adjust the contrast but still lose a lot in line quality. I've purchased a new scanner and hopefully will get better results.
This is a rough pencil of one of the strips in the "Freeze Tag" segment. I letter the strip first, then do an approximation of the final art in pencil. I then ink with a Faber Castell Brush Pen.
I'll have some new strips in a few days. Meantime check to see if you missed any late additions. Thanks for visiting!

Sunday Page--Early On

This is a Sunday page, the first two-tiered gag I wrote when I first started working on the strip. The page has been laying in my flat file for a long time because the page was starting to yellow. I touched it up by removing the tinge. Otherwise this is how the finish looked. I'll be posting new strips next week as I'm trying to finish up the Polar Bear sequence. Some funny stuff coming up.

Daily Comic Strip--One is the loneliest number...

This is the very first Lewis and Cluck comic strip I ever drew. I dug out my original. You'll notice on the original strip the ship was named "The Collapso" a weak take on Jacque Cousteau's "Calypso". Also the use of zip a tone was popular back when. The idea came to me after a deep sea fishing charter ( A three hour tour...a three hour tour) out near the Ana Capa Islands. Seventy degrees, Pacific Ocean, middle of January...I saw whales, schools of flying fish, dolphins and seals, it was a great day right out of a Jacques Cousteau adventure. On the trip back looking whistfully at the sunset, I penned a few gags and Lewis & Cluck began to come to life in my imagination.

Daily Comic Strip - "Depth Charge"

This is "Depth Charge" The Great White Shark. and Captain Lewis' obsession. The Captain's goal is to tag and study this feared fish which has been unchanged for millions of years.
Unfortunately, for the crew of the "Albatross," this "Perfect Eating Machine" has been designed for one purpose; to someday know what chicken tastes like.

LEWIS & CLUCK Explorer Chickens
This is a Sundaypage drop panel
for a comic strip
I'm developing
called Lewis & Cluck.
(Cross Peter Sellars
with Jacques Cousteau)
My attempt
is to do a gag-a-day,
adventure and
continuity strip.
From day one we'll join
them on their research
ship "The Albatross"
as they embark on a
voyage of discovery
from the enigma of
Easter Island to the
mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle to the search for Big Foot, with a lot of laughs along the way, I hope.
This panel sets the stage for a three week series of gags around their attempt at tree sitting to save the soft beaked, narcoleptic, spotted puff owl from a corporation's ravenous chainsaws.

Daily Comic Strip--"Monkey Business"

This is a sample strip to show that sometimes their adventures
don't have to take place at an exotic locale. In this series,
Captain Lewis finds himself a target of desire from the amorous
antropologist Jane Woodall, who lures him up to her hotel room for some personal grooming. Cluck comes to the rescue in his bellhop disguise just in the nick of time.
